Back office automation, end to end

Automation usually shows up in pieces. A macro here, a script there, one clever tool that does one thing. The pieces help, and they also leave the seams exposed. The work still stops every time it crosses from one piece to the next, and a person has to carry it over the gap.

End to end means we follow one process the whole way through and remove the gaps, not just the steps. Take supplier invoices. A mail arrives with a PDF. The old way, a person opens it, reads the fields, keys them into the system, checks them against the order, and routes it for approval. Five handoffs, five chances to stall.

The automated way, the mail is read on arrival, the fields are extracted, the invoice is matched to the order, discrepancies are flagged, and only the exceptions reach a person. The clean ones flow through. The person spends their time on the few that do not match, which is the only part that ever needed a human.

We do not automate a step. We automate the path. That is where the time actually hides, in the handoffs between the steps, not in the steps themselves.

Start with one path from end to end. Prove it. Then take the next.

One supplier invoice

Five handoffs, five chances to stall. A person carries the work over every gap, and the work waits until they do.

The time hides in the handoffs, not in the steps.
